The Haute Route is one of the most classic ski tours in the French Alps. This "High Level Route" leads from Chamonix to Zermatt passing through some of the most beautiful mountain scenery. Along the route, you will pass famous summit such as the Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, Pigne d'Arolla, Grand Combin and finally, the majestic Matterhorn.
The route is about 70 km (43 mi) as the crow flies but much longer on foot. There are a couple different variations offered by guiding companies. The tour takes about a week for average mortals but has been done in under 24 hours! Evenings are spent in classic mountain huts. It is best to reserve ahead in the high season.
This route requires a good level of fitness and it is necessary to bring a guide.
